RSPB LearnBirds

The RSPB required a web application through which they could provide learning material to people interested in birds and birdwatching. Once a user has logged-in they are presented with 6 different modules as well as access to the resource library which contains the RPSB Handbook of British Birds and Where to Watch Birds - Britain.

Should you maintain control over your client’s CMS?

An issue that I have come across more and more frequently recently involves content management solutions and broken websites. By broken I mean websites that are visually not as they should be. This is sometimes due to the limitations of the CMS, but more often due to the client’s lack of knowledge with regards to web programming. Now it isn’t fair to blame the client, for not everyone can be expected to be web-savvy, in fact if that was the case I’d be in more stiffer competition for employment. Continue reading »

File upload in Opera Mini and Safari on iPhone

I have been spending some of my time lately working on a application that will be partly used on mobile devices. The intention is to capture a photo and upload it from a mobile device. We are using Flickr to upload and store the photos through their APIs and to also retrieve them for a different part of the application.

Early on in the development of the application, to test the functionality we simply used the web browsers on our desktop computers, and we then tested the application in mobile devices once we were confident it met the requirements. We assumed that the web browsers on mobile devices wouldn’t be too much different from those found on desktop computer. We were wrong. Continue reading »

3G iPhone, so what?

As the dust begins to settle after Monday’s announcement of the 3G iPhone at the WWDC, it’s time to take stock and actually examine the 3G iPhone for all its worth without getting caught up in the Apple zeitgeist.

When the original iPhone launched I wasn’t too bothered about being first in line to purchase one, in fact I wasn’t that bothered about the iPhone at all. It didn’t do anything that really impressed me. It didn’t do anything that you couldn’t already do with most of the mobile phones you can already get over here in Europe. Continue reading »

Developing with OpenDNS

OpenDNS logoMore and more I find myself using new domains to test my latest project out on. Although I use XAMPP to develop on locally, it isn’t a true replication of my web host and so once I have done what I can locally I move to the testing server, usually a sub-domain on my webhost.

There are problems however with using sub-domains; one being the wait. It is recommended that you allow up to 48 hours for any DNS updates to be made before you begin using the domain. This is often a frustration as I want to be able to create sub-domains at a moment’s notice (though I am getting better at creating them in advance). Continue reading »

My first smartphone

3 weeks ago I bought my first smartphone, a Nokia e61. Whilst I like to keep abreast of current technology (or at least try), mobile phones are something that I’m not too bothered about. I rarely use my mobile phone as I can organise all my social events via the web through the likes of Facebook, sharing Google Calendars and various instant messenger clients. I also don’t have a mobile phone contract, I’m on a pay-as-you-go plan. Continue reading »
