For hire

Regular visitors will notice that I haven’t written an article in some time. No I haven’t died, unfortunately I was made redundant earlier this week and I have been contemplating on what to do next.

It’s the first time I have been made redundant and it is a somewhat odd feeling. Part of me thinks great, no more work, but then the other half realises that I won’t have an income, I won’t have the same opportunity to speak to my colleagues who are more like friends, and odd quirks like doing the tea runs.

I am a victim of the economic downturn/recession which has featured quite heavily in my more recent articles. I know that it isn’t just a problem that my employer faces, Mahalo yesterday announced they were cutting 10% of their staff whilst at Pandora it is 14%. Even the perceived big players in the industry aren’t safe; EBay announced they are laying off 1000 members of staff and Yahoo will be letting go of 10% of all staff to help save $400 million in annual costs.

My colleagues have been very supportive about my redundancy, and have offered to help in whatever ways they can. So I can hear you all asking, what next? Well straight back on the horse of course!

I am currently looking for a job in the web industry. The position I held was Front-end Developer which involved the application of interface designs through HTML and CSS whilst also supporting the creation of the interface designs. I understand search engine optimisation and internet marketing (though I won’t profess I know it all!) and can see how social networking apps and communities can be used to increase visibility.

If you are reading this and are in the position to offer me a job but want to know more, you can read my recently updated ‘About’ page, view my LinkedIn profile or visit one of my other social networking profiles to find out who I am.

Should I fit the bill for what you are looking for please leave a comment below, head over to the ‘Contact’ page and fill out the form to get in touch, or send me a tweet on Twitter and I will respond asap. No agencies please.

I am so sorry to hear about the redundancy, it is not a good time for you, but you have to look at the positives, the world is your oyster now, you can go onto anything now, so I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do next, all the best.

Hi Scott, i just came across your portfolio from @imjustcreative’s tweet. I’m sorry to hear that you have lost your job – I have looked through your portfolio though and it seems like you have a very strong profile so I am sure that it won’t be too long until you find a great position! Best of luck – Emma

With a website and and webdesign portfolio as strong as presented here I’m sure you’ll do fine.

At 33 I’m just about old enough to have vivid memories of the last recession in the early 90s

If this one is going to be on the same level as that then there’s going to be real hard times ahead
