Flash in a box

I’ve never been a big fan of Flash, largely because I can remember the era of tacky, full-Flash websites that merely existed to boost the egos of their designers. However I am gradually coming round to seeing the advantages of the platform.

scottmallinson.com now mobile friendly

You may recall me asking you what was in your pocket a couple of days ago so when developing a mobile friendly version of this website I would know which are the most popular mobile devices, and what to test the website on.

What’s in your pocket?

To jump on the trend of the growing number of websites that are creating mobile-friendly versions of their content, I aim to do the same in the not so distant future. Looking at the stats gathered from Google Analytics, I can see that the largest number of mobile device visitors use the iPhone to visit this website.

Thoughts on the T-Mobile G1

The launch of the eagerly anticipated T-Mobile G1 occured yesterday, and I thought that I would offer my thoughts and feelings on the ‘revolutionary’ device now that the marketing hype has died down some 24 hours later.

The internet has outdated the TV licence

BBC logo

As broadband speeds increase with technology advancements and coverage is getting increasingly better, not just in the UK but worldwide, more and more people have access to the internet and the information it carries. Information that was once restricted by geographic location no longer is, and it has never been so easy to find answers to the most complex or obscure questions.

The future of Microsoft

Microsoft logoFollowing the criticism and perceived failure of Windows VIsta, the latest operating system from Microsoft, it has made me think about the direction in which Microsoft are going and how they fair against competitors in their markets.

File upload in Opera Mini and Safari on iPhone

I have been spending some of my time lately working on a application that will be partly used on mobile devices. The intention is to capture a photo and upload it from a mobile device. We are using Flickr to upload and store the photos through their APIs and to also retrieve them for a different part of the application.

Early on in the development of the application, to test the functionality we simply used the web browsers on our desktop computers, and we then tested the application in mobile devices once we were confident it met the requirements. We assumed that the web browsers on mobile devices wouldn’t be too much different from those found on desktop computer. We were wrong.

3G iPhone, so what?

As the dust begins to settle after Monday’s announcement of the 3G iPhone at the WWDC, it’s time to take stock and actually examine the 3G iPhone for all its worth without getting caught up in the Apple zeitgeist.

When the original iPhone launched I wasn’t too bothered about being first in line to purchase one, in fact I wasn’t that bothered about the iPhone at all. It didn’t do anything that really impressed me. It didn’t do anything that you couldn’t already do with most of the mobile phones you can already get over here in Europe.

My first smartphone

3 weeks ago I bought my first smartphone, a Nokia e61. Whilst I like to keep abreast of current technology (or at least try), mobile phones are something that I’m not too bothered about. I rarely use my mobile phone as I can organise all my social events via the web through the likes of Facebook, sharing Google Calendars and various instant messenger clients. I also don’t have a mobile phone contract, I’m on a pay-as-you-go plan.

My move to Google Apps

Google Apps logoThis past week I have been moving things over to Google Apps. This change has come as a result of an increasing amount of spam mail coming to my personal email address, as well as the want to have a central calendar solution that I could access anywhere and sync with my computer and mobile phone.

Internet TV

I have never really been a massive fan of watching television. Very rarely will I make plans to sit down and watch an entire television series. I guess this partly comes from my busy social life, but more so the inconsistent television schedule. On occasions I have found myself committing to a television series for the broadcasting channel to air it at different times each week. So I was intrigued when I first heard of Joost, Hulu, BBC IPlayer and Channel 4’s 4oD services.

VOIP: we need some kind of Meebo mashup

There is no necessity for me to use VOIP, it would simply be one of those things that would be ‘nice’ to have. For me to be able to call my brother at university for free, to speak to my relative in America for free, for example. The draw for me is the cost, nothing.

iPod Touch and the mobile web

There has been a lot of buzz over the internet recently regarding Apple’s September Keynote where Steve Jobs announced the introduction of the iPod Touch and the revamped iPod Classic and Nano.

Whilst the Classic and Nano are in essence the same product with a few modifications; storage capacity, screen-size, interface enhancements, the iPod Touch is a different animal. It comes in two different sizes, 8GB or 16GB which make use of the latest advancements in flash drive storage.

My First Mobile Web App

Today I built my first mobile web app. In fact I can’t take full credit for it as Dave coded the core functionality and I scripted the interface. It’s only something small; a simple two page web app that let’s you upload files and browse through and view the uploaded files.
