Ulterior motives behind Microsoft’s open source work backing?

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, no doubt you will have seen my particle posted yesterday entitled “Microsoft backs open source work“. Since I read the original article on the BBC site it got me thinking. Why, now, are Microsoft interested in ‘making friends’ with the open-source software community when they have been rivals for so long? Well from what I can see there are 3 possible reasons; Bill Gates stepping back from Microsoft, the ongoing battle with the European Union regulators and Yahoo!

Microsoft logoFollowing the criticism and perceived failure of Windows VIsta, the latest operating system from Microsoft, it has made me think about the direction in which Microsoft are going and how they fair against competitors in their markets.

High Contrast mode in Windows XP

An interesting problem arose in the office yesterday. For some unknown reason background images in webpages were not appearing on one computer. The eventual cause of the problem was that the computer was running Windows XP in High Contrast mode, though it didn’t seem apparent from looking at it.

Windows Vista… again

Whilst I had a spare weekend to myself I decided to install Windows Vista… again. You may recall that in January I installed the Business edition of Windows Vista, however I found after installation that my broadband modem was not compatible with operating system (for some reason it does not like network connections through USB?!), which resulted in a prompt return to Windows XP as being in the web industry I’ve come to rely on my broadband connection.

After hearing about the hype surrounding Windows Vista I decided to take the plunge and give it a go. To ensure that I could use Vista without a hitch I did as Microsoft advise and downloaded the Vista Upgrade Advisor to see if both my hardware and software would be supported by the new OS.
