See you on the otherside

Tomorrow I will be heading down with Kean Richmond to the Future of Web Design conference that is being held on Thursday. I am looking forward to it as it will only be my second Carsonified event I will have attended, and first Web Design conference (I attended Future of Web Apps back in October last year).

Flash in a box

I’ve never been a big fan of Flash, largely because I can remember the era of tacky, full-Flash websites that merely existed to boost the egos of their designers. However I am gradually coming round to seeing the advantages of the platform.

The blog is dead, long live the blog!

Over the past couple of months a lot has changed in my life; I went from working as a freelancer with my own clients to working freelance full-time at a small web agency here in York, to accepting a full-time permanent position at the University of Sheffield.

New Apple products, but is the timing right?

Yesterday Apple launched the new Macbooks, Macbook Pros and Cinema Displays and the reception seems to be quite positive. Twitter was certainly set alight by those pouring over the beautiful new designs and glossy finishes. However is the time right for Apple to launch such high-end and dare I say, expensive, products?

How will the credit crunch affect the web industry?

You would have to be living under a rock or with a remote tribe along the Amazon river to not hear and see the effects that the current economic downturn is having on businesses across the world. Whilst governments the world-over have made arrangements to prevent the global economy from sliding any further you can’t help but wonder how will this affect us all in the web industry?

Thoughts on the T-Mobile G1

Ulterior motives behind Microsoft’s open source work backing?

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, no doubt you will have seen my particle posted yesterday entitled “Microsoft backs open source work“. Since I read the original article on the BBC site it got me thinking. Why, now, are Microsoft interested in ‘making friends’ with the open-source software community when they have been rivals for so long? Well from what I can see there are 3 possible reasons; Bill Gates stepping back from Microsoft, the ongoing battle with the European Union regulators and Yahoo!

The internet has outdated the TV licence

BBC logo

As broadband speeds increase with technology advancements and coverage is getting increasingly better, not just in the UK but worldwide, more and more people have access to the internet and the information it carries. Information that was once restricted by geographic location no longer is, and it has never been so easy to find answers to the most complex or obscure questions.

Microsoft more open than Apple?

Apple logo

For a long time I have wanted an Apple Mac. The want was initially a desire. I fell for the glossy looks even though there was little beneath the surface that put it at an advantage over a Linux or Microsoft box. Now however, with the adoption of the Intel processor and the ease of running Windows on a Mac, the desire is more a need.

The future of Microsoft

Microsoft logoFollowing the criticism and perceived failure of Windows VIsta, the latest operating system from Microsoft, it has made me think about the direction in which Microsoft are going and how they fair against competitors in their markets.

Building a web app in four days

Matt logoOver the past four days I have been monitoring the development of Matt, Multi Account Twitter Tweeter application which has been built by the guys and girls over at Carsonified. Now whilst I could talk about the actual development of the application, it has already been done here and I would rather concentrate on the marketing of the application and the company culture from where the idea originated.

We need you! The demand for more web developers

It’s an interesting, exciting but equally challenging time being a professional in the web industry. With new technologies emerging every six months it is getting harder to keep abreast of all the developments to ensure you’re skills aren’t outdated.

XHTML 2.0

Although still only a working draft the outlines look very appealing. In particular the fallback facility and the inclusion of more logical elements; l for a line of code or text in essence replacing the br element and nl elements intended for use where a navigation list appears.
