The blog is dead, long live the blog!

Over the past couple of months a lot has changed in my life; I went from working as a freelancer with my own clients to working freelance full-time at a small web agency here in York, to accepting a full-time permanent position at the University of Sheffield.

WeAreJustCreative redesign now also live

Following the successful implementation and response to the ImJustCreative (IJC) redesign just a few days ago, Graham Smith, who also runs WeAreJustCreative (WAJC) decided to modify the design to suit the audio, visual & social media community creative weblog.

The effect of CSS galleries on website traffic

It has now been about a week, 7 days since this website got picked up by CSS Mania among other CSS galleries and I thought I’d share with you what affect getting listed on CSS galleries had on my website traffic, feed subscribers and bandwidth used.

How do you use Twitter?

Twitter is a great web application. It’s simply a communication tool, but due to it’s flexibility it can be used in so many different ways; from keeping in touch with friends, tracking industry peers or for use as a marketing tool.

My own-branded OpenID

OpenID logoAs Marshall Kirkpatrick mentioned earlier this month on ReadWriteWeb, myOpenID now allow you to create OpenID accounts through your own domain.

I’ve already covered this briefly as an aside however as I regularly use OpenIDs for both work (Basecamp) and pleasure (ClaimID) I decided to give it a go. My current OpenID provided by ClaimID, who were at the forefront of implementing OpenIDs, is not very aesthetically pleasing, and the premise of myOpenIDs new feature is to allow me to have my own .scottmallinson.com OpenID.

Prodigious vs. ClaimID

I recently came across Prodigious via CSSMania. I was drawn in by the vivid use of colours used for the interface.

The purpose behind Prodigious is simple:

Prodigious is for anyone who wants to know who is responsible for a site they like, and anyone that wants to take credit for the sites they make.

claimID new feature release

claimID have incorporated a new function into the online identity application that alerts the account holder whenever one of their links goes offline. Being a web designer, I find this very useful because it can sometimes be weeks, even months before I realise one of the websites I have created for my portfolio is either broken or removed. As Fred put it, the new feature comes with a “big fat alpha” but I’m sure I’ll find it useful nonetheless.

Online identities in social applications

Terrell Russell, one of the founders of claimID, have been in touch with the guys at Last.fm requesting they add MicroID meta information to the sections of the user’s profile pages. This will allow claimID to verify any claims to Last.fm pages that have been made. In response, Russ, a member of the Last.fm staff, has stated that the MicroID meta insertion will be live in a month.

Microsummaries

Tom has littered my del.icio.us account with some links to information about microsummaries. I hadn’t heard anything about them until Tom mentioned them to me. Simply put they are dynamic bookmarks that show the latest “content title” that is determined by the microsummary embedded into the bookmarked page.

Update: MicroID

Without fail my websites have been verified (at least the ones that I have administration rights over). By adding the MicroID meta data to each webpage and verifying each website (via ClaimID), it reinforces any claims I have made offering an accurate resource for finding out who created what. The only problem is the websites that I have created in the past that I no longer have administration priviledges for I cannot validate. Not to worry though, I doubt that anyone will contest my claims (at least I hope not!).

MicroID

All websites that I currently have administration rights for (boardstupid, Scoutunit, Content Incorporated CMS and scottmallinson.co.uk) have had MicroIDs added to their meta information. The purpose of a MicroID is to claim intellectual property for the webpage or website you have created by including the following tag in the section of a webpage:

ClaimID apologies

I guess an apology is in order for ClaimID whom I shuned in an early post. To my suprise I found my ClaimID listing appear just one position beneath my own website, all over the space of the weekend! Now I’m impressed and if anyone wants a quick, easy and cheap way to get themselves listed quite high up in Google then I suggest ClaimID your tool of choice.
