See you on the otherside

Tomorrow I will be heading down with Kean Richmond to the Future of Web Design conference that is being held on Thursday. I am looking forward to it as it will only be my second Carsonified event I will have attended, and first Web Design conference (I attended Future of Web Apps back in October last year).

2008: Year In Review

2008 was quite some year; I visited Wembley Stadium for the first time for Play.com Live back in March, I attended my first Future Of… event back in October, I was also made redundant back in October and I took my first trip on a plane in November to see Sigur Rós in Paris. I guess you could say that 2008 was a year of firsts, so what does 2009 hold in store?

New design for 2009

To see in the New Year I whipped up the design you see now in front of you (or at http://www.scottmallinson.com for the feed readers). I wanted to show off more of my portfolio work and the previous design just didn’t allow for it.

Chasing traffic

For those who know me, I am a big fan of web applications and websites like FeedBurner, Google Analytics and Alexa for providing free access to statistics regarding websites that I maintain. They provide an insight into who the visitors are, where they come from (both in terms of referral website and geographic location) and what they are interested in. However using the aforementioned web applications and websites can have a negative effect as I’ll discuss.

One week on

So it has been a week since I first announced here on my website that I have been made redundant and I thought I’d let you all know what has happened and changed since then.

For hire

Regular visitors will notice that I haven’t written an article in some time. No I haven’t died, unfortunately I was made redundant earlier this week and I have been contemplating on what to do next.

Thoughts from FOWA

As I mentioned earlier last week, I attended the Future of Web Apps (FOWA) Expo last Thursday and Friday. It was my first ‘Future of’ web event and leading upon to attending the event I was filled with nervous apprehension as I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Heading to FOWA

This evening I will be heading down to London with Kean Richmond (@keanrichmond) for the Future of Web Apps (FOWA) Expo which I will be attending on Thursday and Friday. By the sounds of it, it is going to be an awesome event.

How do you use Twitter?

Twitter is a great web application. It’s simply a communication tool, but due to it’s flexibility it can be used in so many different ways; from keeping in touch with friends, tracking industry peers or for use as a marketing tool.

Ryan Carson and the Carsonified events

“I want the world, I want the whole world, I want to lock it all up in my pocket, It’s my bar of chocolate, Give it to me, Now!” sang Veruca Salt famously in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Well Ryan Carson, Carsonified’s very own Willy Wonka, is giving you the chance to travel around the world, meet amazing speakers and attend fun conferences.

The internet has outdated the TV licence

BBC logo

As broadband speeds increase with technology advancements and coverage is getting increasingly better, not just in the UK but worldwide, more and more people have access to the internet and the information it carries. Information that was once restricted by geographic location no longer is, and it has never been so easy to find answers to the most complex or obscure questions.

Should you maintain control over your client’s CMS?

An issue that I have come across more and more frequently recently involves content management solutions and broken websites. By broken I mean websites that are visually not as they should be. This is sometimes due to the limitations of the CMS, but more often due to the client’s lack of knowledge with regards to web programming. Now it isn’t fair to blame the client, for not everyone can be expected to be web-savvy, in fact if that was the case I’d be in more stiffer competition for employment.

Play.com Live

Play.com Live logoLast weekend I attended the Play.com Live exhibition held at the Wembley Stadium. A large crowd turned out for both Saturday and Sunday and the exhibition soon filled up.

I was able to play some the latest games expected to hit the shelves later this year. Most of the games consoles, Wii, XBox 360 and PS3 were connected up to HD-TV’s so we could experience the games at their best quality. Goodie bags were handed out which contained DVD’s, marketing material, key-rings and books and several competitions ran for various games console related prizes.

Wordpress 2.0.4 release

I upgraded to the latest version of Wordpress yesterday after the guys at Dreamhost added version 2.0.4 to the one-click-installs section. Nothing much has changed from 2.0.3 from my perspective apart from the inclusion of umpteen themes. You now have a good variety of themes to choose from (maybe a subtle hint to prevent all blogs looking the same!)

Technorati faults/improvements

I understand Technorati has just undergone a refit, but there are still some problems evident from before the change. For example, users of Technorati may have noticed that some listings from my blog are displaying “Permanent link to {post title}” instead of just the post title. This was due to my website going a little screwy and Technorati used my trackback URL to pick up my feed. Well that problem has now been fixed however my blog listings still show the incorrect titles.
