Grid-based layouts
Grid-based layouts have become something of a phenomenon across the web design community over the last few months. Whilst the principles have been around for many, many years in the print media it is only recently that the approach to layout has been adapted for screen and the internet.
Following my recommendations we have recently started using grid-based layouts at MyKnowledgeMap on which we construct interface designs and develop the code. The framework that we are currently using is the 960 Grid System which we have found to be lightweight, well documentated and supports both the designer and developer.
Whilst the grid-based layouts have only been used on Wordpress blog websites so far, interface designs for more complex web applications are being constructed using the 960 Grid System. We have found it to be quicker to design and develop a website using a grid-based layout than without, and the quality through consistency has also improved. The time saving has really come through being able to refer to a pre-constructed CSS library of layout elements.
The Wordpress blog websites are expected to be launched within the next week or so, so you will be able to make your own judgement as to how well you feel they have been used, and whether or not you decide to let grid-based layouts into your life.
