The RSPB required a web application through which they could provide learning material to people interested in birds and birdwatching. Once a user has logged-in they are presented with 6 different modules as well as access to the resource library which contains the RPSB Handbook of British Birds and Where to Watch Birds - Britain.
Whilst I had a spare weekend to myself I decided to install Windows Vista… again. You may recall that in January I installed the Business edition of Windows Vista, however I found after installation that my broadband modem was not compatible with operating system (for some reason it does not like network connections through USB?!), which resulted in a prompt return to Windows XP as being in the web industry I’ve come to rely on my broadband connection.
Anyhow, I have had it running successfully for a few hours now without fail. I am able to get internet access through my Netgear D834G wireless modem/router which was bought partly for Windows Vista compatibility and partly for enabling internet access throughout the house.
I haven’t had chance to run through and test the compatibility of all the programs installed on my computer (I performed an upgrade from Windows XP) but when I went to run iTunes I was greeted with an alert directing my to ‘repair’ iTunes through the Control Panel. Not a great start.
A further annoyance is that when you wish to make a change through the Control Panel you are met with a dialogue box requesting confirmation of your intention. An issue that has been parodied in the Apple Mac ads and quite rightly so.
For the few hours I have had Windows Vista installed it has not particularly persuaded me into staying on the Microsoft route, and the much needed computer upgrade instead might result in an Apple purchase, be it Mini, iMac or Powerbook. At the moment Apple appear a very strong and appealing alternative to the ‘beige boxes’ of Microsoft.
